I had the misfortune to watch part of a BBC TV lunchtime show today.

"What is this?" asked a competitor.
"It's a glass paperweight", confirmed the expert.
"What's it for?"
The BBC mission includes "to act in the public interest, serving all audiences through the provision of impartial, high-quality and distinctive output and services which inform, educate and entertain".

The lunchtime show achieved just that - it informed and educated some (those with remedial needs) and entertained the rest (who were unable to conceive any so ignorant)

And by the sounds of it educated others that there are those in the wider public who don’t possess what might be considered basic knowledge.

Aye, but who's ever actually used a paper weight for weighing paper down?! It's fair to say I've spent much of my life working with bits of paper, but never felt the need to weigh it down except, very rarely, when sitting in the garden. And even then, would I have walked indoors, picked up a purpose-made weight to stop the wind blowing the paper away? Not on your nelly. They've always struck me as rather odd things.

Talking of 'odd things' - don't wine bottle stoppers fall into the same category ?
