I have used all my security programs and nothing shows up as a virus etc.

Do the above displays give anyone a definate clue what is going wrong please?

Came across this :

BCCode: 50 0x00000050

Cause

The BCCode 50 usually occurs after the installation of faulty hardware or in the event of failure of installed
hardware (usually related to defective RAM, be it main memory, L2 RAM cache, or video RAM).

Another common cause is the installation of a faulty system service.

Antivirus software can also trigger this error, as can a corrupted NTFS volume.
Resolving the Problem

Resolving a faulty hardware problem: If hardware has been added to the system recently, remove it to see
if the error recurs. If existing hardware has failed, remove or replace the faulty component. You should run
hardware diagnostics supplied by the system manufacturer. For details on these procedures, see the owner's
manual for your computer.

Resolving a faulty system service problem: Disable the service and confirm that this resolves the error. If so,
contact the manufacturer of the system service about a possible update. If the error occurs during system
startup, restart your computer, and press F8 at the character-mode menu that displays the operating system
choices. At the resulting Windows Advanced Options menu, choose theLast Known Good Configuration
option. This option is most effective when only one driver or service is added at a time.

Resolving an antivirus software problem: Disable the program and confirm that this resolves the error. If it
does, contact the manufacturer of the program about a possible update.

Resolving a corrupted NTFS volume problem: Run Chkdsk /f /r to detect and repair disk errors. You must
restart the system before the disk scan begins on a system partition. If the hard disk is SCSI, check for
problems between the SCSI controller and the disk.

Finally, check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help pinpoint the
device or driver that is causing the error. Disabling memory caching of the BIOS might also resolve it.

So a fair bit to look into :(

Anything obvious ring a bell? like new hardware?

Thanks for your help and suggestions. (no new hardware purchased for around a year, so I dont think its that)

Windows updates have been changed today to install the next updates. perhaps things will right themselves at the next one.

Cannot seem to get any update upload today. (been running all morning)

If you're not averse to a screwdriver, you could also check and reSEAT any hardware cards like graphics/ network/ etc on the motherboard taking the appropriate precautions. Also you could try running Memtest a few times to check for faulty RAM. both of which can cause random crashes.

As mention above it may be a hard disk failing, that would also influence the computers ability to download and save any update software.

To check for corrupted NTFS volume problem and hard disk segment failures:

> Run
>Chkdsk /f /r

to detect and repair any disk errors.

Do not touch anything until machine has completed task.

It might be a failing but not failed hard disc... that's what happened to me just before it failed completely, mine was a mechanical HHD not SSD, replaced it with a high speed SSD and re-installed everything, it was a pain but (touch brazilian hardwood) it's been fine since

On my iPad at the moment but thanks for all the posts above..
I will reboot the PC and try them all and let you know how things go or its off to the doctors!
But what is switching off the virus protector. Microsoft security, a virus?

Might be a good time to start backing up data worth keeping.

Afternoon DW

This rings a bell. I run Win 7 Pro and Microsoft took it upon themselves to offer me a free upgrade to Win 10. I declined, but it turns out that every time I installed an update to Win 7 they re-enabled the option.

Around this time, downloading Win 7 updates became really slow, including the security essentials definitions updates.

I stumbled upon a bit of free software by the Gibson Research Corporation called Never 10, which stops this continuous re-enabling nonsense. Microsoft may have stopped offering the Win 10 update, but there may be something left on your machine which is causing the problem, particularly the very slow update downloads.

I installed 'Never 10' and things went back to normal.

Do a back up and try installing it from here ...

https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

There is a link on that page to a bit of software from Microsoft which they allege does the same thing.

Cheers

Dave

Nev if I create a usb bootable stick with memtest, does that mean if I use it to boot up I then have to upload to a clean and empty harddrive to carry on?

Not sure what you mean. You don't need a hard drive, the application boots and runs off the USB.

No . Memtest runs from the usb drive so does not actually touch the HDD that windows is on. Once you've created your bootable usb stick or cd, you tell you pc to boot from usb or cd first and then restart the pc. it then loads and runs from the usb and displays on your screen. any faults found will be shown on the screen.
once you've run it a few times and are happy that you RAM is ok simply remove the stick and reboot and you'll be back in windows.

Is there a way to copy Picasso to a laptop or have I got to copy my pictures to an outside drive?
Don't know, sorry. I'm not familiar with Picasa.

Don't know, sorry. I'm not familiar with Picasa.

It automatically stores jpeg pictures like an album without physical motivation from My Pictures.

Thanks to all, things settled down last night did all above apart from doing a usb upload. Cleaned out a lot of dust inside, pushed things down etc. used some more app cleaners. Smooth running this morning.

I use an air compressor I bought from Aldi years ago to clean out computers regularly. Works very well.

Picasa doesn't store your images, they are in your pictures folder.

Copy that and documents and desktop folders to an external drive.

Even better, install DropBox and put pictures/documents folders in the DropBox folder. Modify the default location for both.
Then they are continuously backed up.
