I consider myself to be fairly safety conscious. I use guards (and not only when I am filming), riving knives are adjusted properly, always a pushstick to hand. So how come I nearly lost the end of my finger today?

I, er, got my finger trapped when I opened up my tripod...

There is a stop against which the leg locates to stop it doing a Bambi and I got my finger in there. The mechanical advantage must be about 50:1 and it 7%^&* hurt! I'm going to have a blue nail for weeks and I feel very, very silly.

PS Did I mention it hurts?

Hi, Steve

Ouch, you need to drill a hole to let the blood out or your nail will fall off, red hot paper clip or a Nail Gun  if you are a real man

I had this done one lovely afternoon @ A&E, however they didn't stop drilling when the blood started seeping out, oh no. They carried on further until they hit the flesh underneath the nail. If my face didn't tell them to stop, my colourful language definitely did! Now that hurt like mad, and I couldn't move as it would have made it worse. Good luck with the finger Steve. :)

Cheers _Dan.

Steve

If you use a new 1/16th drill

clean it then holding it between your finger and thumb twist it back and forth it will easily and painlessly drill through the nail

once through the pain will drop once the pressure is relieved

done it loads of times in the past

hope it heals soon

Oh dear as an ex-nurse I wince for you and my clumsy colleagues. I would recommend the paperclip method unless you are very skilled at twirling a small drill between your fingers.

I don't know, your not safe to be let loose Mr Maskery! LOL No seriously hope it heals soon....I know the pain I have been there too but I used a lump hammer!

Last year at the local A&E they used a largish hypodermic needle to 'drill' a hole. I asked them why they didn't use the red hot paper clip and was told that they aren't allowed spirit lamps to heat the paper clip up any more for elf 'n safety reasons  Just this morning I cut off the last off an old nail that got squashed at the end of last year as I was worried I'd catch it and tear it off which from past experience I know to be very painful. Hope it calms down soon.

woahh! needles, red hot safety pins, drill bits ??!! just run it under a cold tap for ten minutes. I use to go around with at least 2 or 3 purple nails on the go at any one time until I discovered how effective the simple application of cold water was. The sooner you can get to a tap the more effective - ideally under a minute. Cant remember the last time I sported a decorated nail but I'm still bashing them. Still, its not quite as macho down the pub as telling your mates how you relieved the pressure and watching them wince!

Coille, bad news, when you start reaching advanced ages you wake up in the mornings with an aching thumb. Do you remember hitting it with that club hammer 20 years ago, now its starting to ache again.

it would appear I have already reached severe advanced age then as just about every limb and muscle in my body aches! If only I could put all the physio, chiropracter & acupuncture bills through the business against tax! Apparently the tax bods dont accept costs servicing your work-related aches and pains - bummer!
