Also good for gripping longer pieces of wood vertically, so I am told.It's a shoulder vice, considered especially useful for dovetailing. It has the advantage over a metal face vice of being able to grip the work directly in line with the screw and hence doesn't rack under pressure. They're not awfully fashionable because of the relative complexity of building. Rob Cosman and Frank Klaus are among the high profile proponents of the form.
