Let me get this right. They want us to pay £25 (or £50 for Gold membership) for a site that has just three posts in its forum, who's only entry in the 'find a dealer' section is themselves, has an auction section that doesn't work and an empty list of reviews.

Nah, no thanks, I think I'll stick to ukworkshop, at least the members here don't SPAM other forums.

Nope. But I've been and looked for it, and its like this site, only you have to pay £££ to register!!!

So its got a paid-for forum, when this is free

You can advertise equipment for sale, like here, and its free here

Its got access to information - which is free on the HSE website....

Its got an auction, but when I click on place bid, its points to a non existant page. Hmm.. anyone think the spindle moulder cutter head for £0.99 is a little odd?

Its got a "find a dealer" but we've got comments on dealers, rated their websites for securiy, and a list of wood dealers... and err and its free here...

And its got err... zero product reviews and they are.... err free here...

And the forum itself looks a poor comparison to this... which is...err... free

Anyway, roll up folks, £25/year to join a forum.

Charley... we could be onto a winner here.... we could start charging!!!

what do you mean the only dealer is myself?

i am a woodworker by trade

i just came across this website on my surfing

i have contacted woodworkinguk and they emailed me back saying the website isnt fully finshed and that you have to become a member to see all the aspects of the website

i think its a great idea myself

Ahh theirs the catch. Join up to see how wonderful it is.....

Indeed, it may be. But I think having to pay to join is misguided. There are oodles and oodles of free woodwork forums out there already, covering every specialist topic - why anyone would dream of paying for it is beyond me. Furthermore, the auctions - why would you choose to sell into a closed market - ebay is always going to be the most popular.

i think its a great website

this website must have started off from somewhere

its just starting off, and the website isnt 100% finished

but unlimited auction sales, classified adds with pictures, online chat and forum

thats the idea i think

there are so many forums and websites out there

that there needs to be one centralised website where anyone can go

i think it will suceed and become a big sucess

OK, but you aren't half protective of this "new" website though eh?

i think its a great idea myself

i think its a great website

Also, its not independent, the domain name is registered to....let me guess.... SB Woodworking Machinery - the only dealer that appears on the website... and guess who all the auctions belong to????

Like I said, its onto a loser trying to charge I think. Where is the demand for paid-for forums?

Still, we are a welcoming forum, and your posts will be here for everyone to see, and hopefully likewise, any posts on that forum that refer to our free forum here will be similarly left for members to see.

Hi woodworker,

Interesting that your first and only posts here are to promote another site. I'm sure we'd all be interested to know more about you. We welcome all newcomers. :D

Maybe you even have your own website?

On the contrary, as a moderator, I could have chosen to kill your posting, and your membership, given you were posting a link to a "rival" forum. However, I considered it and decided it was on-topic, it may be of interest to our members, and indeed, if our members would like to skip over and join, then that would just great. We have friends on plenty of forums, and many of our members are contributors in several forums. The more the merrier.

I think you'll find everyone here is very comfortable about other forums, and frequently reference across to other forums to illustrate a point, or to access experts who don't necessarily post here.

Most second hand industrial equipment that people sell via electronic online auction is done via ebay - thats the largest audience. Secondly, this website is independent, in so much as it isn't owned by a woodwork dealer, or equipment manufacturer.

How will the forum moderators react to criticism against SB woodworking?

Welcome to the forum.

Woodworker,

It's traditional, on this forum at least, as a newcomer to post a sample of your work for us all to admire. Please do - we'd love to see what you do for living? As a humble amateur I aways learn a lot from the pros on this site.

Just had a look at this site.

Looks to me like only just starting out many links are not found/working.

Cant help but feel that this is merely a disguised commercial enterprise.

Paying money to join a forum!! Surely this goes against the spirit of forums where like minded people freely share knowledge and ideas?

I think I will give this one a miss

Yes, the domain is registered to SB Woodworking. You can see there site here http://www.sbwoodworkingmachinery.co.uk/

Although I can't see any of the images in Firefox, only in Internet Explorer, but they do carry a wide range of products. They used to be in the Worthing area, although I think they moved west a bit a year or two back.

Returning to Woodworkinguk.com, although they won't divulge your personal details to anyone else, you are registering with a commercial site. So they've got your details.

My response

If you actually make a contribution to this forum rather than spamming it then I will publicly apologise for doubting you. Can I say fairer than that?

If you do not work for SB I'll eat my planer/thicknesser.

I get quite enough spam in my work life without having to endure it in my hobby too. That said I will publicly apologise when and if woodworker does make a positive contribution to this forum. But, I hope I've not gone too far with the "eating my planer/thicknesser" comment - I've not had it long. 8)

On the contrary. One of the first things that Internet entrepreneurs realised at the start of the dot.com boom was that of the Network Effect. Online forums are fantastically difficult to build because when you have only a few users it is so hard to attract new users.

It is hard enough with free forums in the face of a larger incumbent which was why in the early days of the Internet there were many millions put into an initial 'land grap' to build as large a footprint as possible in as short a space of time as possible. But using a paid-for business model it is a different matter. With the possible exception of some highly specialised sites targeting high net-worth individuals for whom the information is worth more than the money I am not aware of any site that has built a viable business using the paid-for model from the outset. The nearest is probably FriendReunited but even then you only pay to make contact and it is a relatively small amount.

This is all a testament to the amount of effort that Charley has put into UKWorkshop.

To be fair woodworker, you've not posted before, your first post is to a commercial website, (it may look innocent but its definitely belonging to SB WW), you've not contributed to any other thread, you aren't receiving email, you don't have a website, you claimed to be not connected, but in fact you defended this website far beyond any reasonable level, and the website says the directors are based in Brighton, and lo and behold, their is a reference to brighton in your registered email address.

Anyone smell anything a little fishy?

Why not be honest, say you've started a website, its commercial, would people comment etc.
