Hi,
I am looking to buy a reliable Planer/Thicknesser (advice only at this stage please). I have about £500 to spend and have a limited space 10*8 shed(to be built). What should I get? separate Planer to thicknesser. What about the blades - how often do they need sharpening/best method to keep them in good condition/ or new blades as opposed to sharpening. I do not want a m/c that is a chore as such. Of course the finish needs to be good!

Shed floor will need to be strong for a p/t check the weight and if on castors smooth floor is required.

Thank you for your. I have built the shed floor in 10x8 concrete slab (next stage epoxy covering). I am trying plan next stages for equipment. I have mainly Triton gear so far. Need to think about planer thicknessers, or separate jointer and thicknessers.

In all seriousness I'd recommend getting a cheaper one of eBay. I got a SIP 10x8 in need of fettling and cleaning for £100 a little while ago. With a couple of weeks work, it's a little champ.

£200 should see you the owner of a ready to use model.

Right Ken, the answers are easy, the decisions less so. Separates every time! Provided you have the space!
How often to sharpen, depends on the timber, I got through a set of HSS replaceables in 6 wks on Iroko. Long term I find it cheaper to use re sharpenables.
The best way to keep them in good condition is not to use them!
HSS you can sharpen yourself. Tipped knives are more difficult and more expensive to purchase, also they seem to produce an inferior finish compared with HSS.
If you elect to sharpen your own, buy a spare set. Saves having to sharpen in the middle of a job.
In view of your workshop size I think you will have to go the PT route rather than separates.

Roy.
