I've turned various metals on my wood lathe including pewter, aluminium, brass, bronze and steel.

That was an eye opener as I never thought about using a gouge on brass. I have done some small bits of brass on mine using scrapers, parting tool and files. Saw handle split nuts and ferrules but nothing that big.

Brass is lovely to machine but the swarf is a pain. Seems to have a real talent for digging into you fingers like nothing else.

And it always seems to manage to get infected. No idea why it's worse than other metals.

Pretty bad runout on that chuck. I wonder if he fitted the accessory jaws correctly?

I noticed that but when he got to the last bit without using the tailstock it looked ok. Perhaps head and tail are not centered.

Ah yes, could be.

Of course one has to ask the question - How much did that lump of brass cost?
I would guess it is between 3" and 4" diameter, and 6" long, A few hundred quid at least. And how much of it was turned into swarf?

I've turned aluminium on mine no worries (a motor turning a chuck is what both are after all lol) it's just the accuracy of what you want to make... (I have seriously been thinking about turning the 'spare parts' machine I have here into a CNC lathe, using the old butchered woodworking lathe as a basis... needs a new motor but the rest is ok...)

If you get the machining grade brass, you just get chips rather than swarf. Much easier to work with!

To be fair it was really chips I was on about, should have been more specific. Don't often get actual swarf, as in longer curly stuff.
