I just came across this. I know there are similar lists out there but I thought this one was concise and to the point.

Particularly interested that Iroko can cause pneumonia. I suffered this last year and I wonder if that could have been the culprit.

I can't get anywhere near turning Iroko. The eyes start streaming and breathing is difficult.
Tried it twice on different occasions...same result.

Good post.
This is a subject I have not paid attention to in the past but should have.

Surprised to see that oak is linked to a cancer. Turned tons of oak literally as I operated an industrial copy lathe a couple of years back for a firm making tudor oak repro furniture.

Hi

This is important to bring up. I believe but I could be wrong as I frequently am. At least that what the good lady in doors says. But when I went on a wood working health and safety course some years back the health and safety executive now class all hard woods as carcinogenic. I guess there is a small chance so it is a bit like pill instructions and they include it is there may be a chance.

Use a good airflow mask and you should be ok. I know they are expensive but I haven't found a new set of lungs yet on ebay.

Yeah good advice Mark.
I use a visor and mask now of the type used by paint sprayers but in the past............well I probably taken in more dust than I should of.
An Airshield would be more comfortable I'm sure and its on my list.

I took a look at your work on your website the other day.........excellent.

Thanks Martyn for your comment.

I got an air mask some years ago and use it most of the time. It has the added safety factor of saving your face too if you get a piece exploding.

I see you are in Somerset. Dorset here. But then if you were looking at my site you will know that

Live about 2 miles from Yandles Martock.
Workshop is just outside Bridgwater though :(

at the end of the day breathing in any dust whether its from softwood, hardwood, composite , mineral or whatever isnt going to be great for you - and likewise with getting it in your eyes.

I agree with mark that a good airflow mask is essential - I have one of the old trend airshields which cost me arround 100 notes new but which has lasted me 8 years (and would have lasted longer had i not dropped a large piece of wood on it and broken the strap ) so thats only arround 12.50 per year , which is a pretty good price to pay for protecting your lungs and health ( I got it after coming down with taxine poisoning from turning yew unprotected in 01)

i'm currently using it bodged up with gaffer tape , but work owe me for the oak i bought off mike , so come the new financial year i'm going to use this money to get a new shiny airsheild mk2

Axminster only 25mins away. :D

yeah lol

actually when i think about i'm surrounded theres axminster, toolpost in didcot, yandles, stiles and bates , axminster at high wycome, and a machine mart and screwfix in swindon.

also vasterns timber less than 5 miles away , and interesting timbers lurking in besseleigh to ambush me on the way to work ;)

Great post Wizer.we newbies would never think of anything like that, except
when some of the experienced boys mention it a post ,and then they would be only doing so because they or somebody may be useing a particular timber. Should it be posted as a Sticky?
As for you other boys surrounded by all thoes Bad and Mean and Bold suppliers my heart goes out to you ,trying to make up your mind which one to go to must be heartbreaking God help you!! LUCKY SODS.

weve already got a sticky under the safety heading that takes you to chas's version - not sure we need two.

and yes the decision is agonising - tho not so much where to go , as how to explain the "need" for yet more wood and/or shiny toys to swimbo.

mind you you can talk - what with that bog just down the road throwing up allsorts of interesting timber and free as well ;)

B S M. sorry did not see Chas. Sticker. As regards the Bog ,You dont have the problem of Shouting from 300mts or more which piece to cut or what lenght you want it and then the annoyance of been left the big trailer full insted of the small one   . Then discovering its bloody Yew insted of Oak :x :x . REgards Boysie[/quote]
