I'm trying to run down my offcuts pile by making a few boxes and veneered up some lid panels yesterday ... brownie points to anyone who can identify them all correctly

It looks like you are the only entrant @Fitzroy !

You were actually spot on with the two you named. They are:

Top lhs - Elm, rhs - Mahogany
Second row - both Laurel
Third row lhs - Red Elm, rhs - Myrtle
Bottom lhs - Pepperwood, rhs - Walnut

The Mahogany is quilted which is particularly attractive but probably makes it harder to identify. I don’t think l’d have fared better than you with just the picture.

They are all amazing looking timber, I wouldn’t have known you could get laurel in such large sections and I’ve never heard of pepper wood. Where do you source such exotic and figured timber?

Nice little quiz. Thanks :)

I've saved away both the photo and a snapshot of the answers above in case I'm ever lucky enough to be trying to identify the unusual ones in future.

The laurel is interesting to me as I own a small penknife inlaid with box elder and that would have been my guess for the two pieces on your second row.

This from the web so you can see why I would have guessed wrongly :

They are all beautiful veneers and wouldn't have fared any better than Fitzroy.

What do you use to finish these - I'm interested in burl veneers myself...?

Thanks guys.

There are a few sellers of these veneers on eBay. I think it’s professionals selling offcuts that would otherwise go in the bin.

All of these are single pieces. The price tends to jump if two or more consecutive pieces are sold as they can then be bookmatched. I buy larger burr pieces from Craft Veneers and Capital Crispin.

I’m wedded to wax over oil finish. Chestnut Finishing Oil is good but the best is imho Peacock oil from Skelton Saws. I use Alfie Shine Hard wax from Workshop Heaven. It’s worth it just for the smell!

I was going to guess steamed pear for bottom left :( What is pepperwood? Not come across that
