I think it was Tony Wison who was at the Stoneleigh show this/last year
I was talking to him about the Hegner lathe he was using and he seemed very comfortable turning a rather large bowl as i remember.
If you do decide to get a lathe Wizer make sure it as the swivel head,so you can be more comfy turning,as leaning over the bed can cause back ache
my heart sank to see the dimples on the mallet from the chisels and I reached for the square mallet. Then I pulled myself together and realised this is what happens to mallets and it's not a piece of sculpture! However, I think I'm going to save this for light softer work, mainly carving. Which means I'm just going to HAVE to turn another one with a stronger heavier head!
So do you think I might fit a lathe in here
I've already got an armoured cable halfway up the garden so it shouldn't be a problem getting power in there.
SWMBO and I were also talking about the area in front of the summer house. Neither of us are gardeners (any more) and we have a large deck area for entertaining. So I think we're also going to put a shed either side of the path here
Just for storage and stuff. With me taking over the garage for my main workshop, it removes a lot of storage space for normal stuff. So SWMBO's on board.
How big is the summer house? One thing to watch for is all that glass. It might need some protection in front of it in case of flying objects. My 'workshop  ' is only 6x10 and I have a full size lathe and a mini lathe in it as well as a small workbench, a grinder, a small bandsaw and a chip extractor. As long as you don't feel the need to move around a lot it works fine.
Wizer.
If you want to use the summer house for your lathe, could you not take the front panel off, doors etc and move it to the very front of the house and just fill the sides in with ply or matching the timber on the house, depending of course on the size of lathe you will/might be getting
Paul, the summer house is right at the end of the garden and it's a great place. I love the outdoors, so having somewhere to sit and turn would be fantastic.
Mart: Thanks for the offer of help. I'll start formulating plans .
Tom,
you are welcome to pop over and have a look at the way I lengthened my shed and insulated it which, if you want to turn and work in the winter it's a must.
It may help in your planning.
Also I could perhaps come over and give you a hand in building/modifying it
