Windows 10

How can I stop unnecessary Upgrades to my Windows 10? This happens at least twice a day and sits there for an hour "updating" and I don't ask it to be done.

There aren't many "unnecessary" updates as the bulk of them are tinkering under the hood to make your security better.

Also if you are having that many then i suspect one of two things is happening.
1. Your system is new but has an original win 10 install and it is trying to 'catch up' by loading all the available updates one after the other.
2. It is failing to install a specific upgrade and continually tries to reload that one. Do you allow the update to run its course or do you stop it?

You should really understand what is going on rather than just stop the updates completely.

To change your setup then type "windows update settings" in the search bar on your task bar (usually lower left). This will allow you to set times when your machine is idle and can do updates when you aren't using it. It will also show you your update history so you can check what updates are actually being installed.

When I upgraded from Windows 7 to 10 it took 3 days.

Brandlin. Had a look and changed my usage time so that updates will occur when I am not online, I hope!!

what does your update history say ?

The fairly recent Update to overcome some of the Processor risks associated with Pre-fetched files or whatever can take 4-5 hrs dependant on machine and Wi-Fi/internet speed, if it's shut down or interrupted who knows how much of it needs to be re-downloaded and sequence started again.

Normal weekly/monthly updates only take a few minutes at most and sometimes a couple of restarts on my machines. (that is if they are even noticed)
