Why is the UK Timber Yards Sooo messed up?

I've certainly found the timber places I've been to helpful. I tell them what I'm after to the best of my ability and ask them to help from there on. This seems an effective tactic.

I dare say that approach garners better service and even better quality timber at the end of the day. Going in looking for the cheapest prices doesn't encourage anyone to go out of their way to provide a service.
