Which filter?

I'm not always producing enough dust to warrant full speed. You have to remember a lot of us, most of us here are hobby users and we like the to quietly tinkle along and ruin good wood whilst wasting money on tools.

I can't imagine why a remote control would be in the least bit useful. Mine simply has an on/off switch and three speed settings on a panel on the unit itself. It couldn't be easier.

Needless to say I have it on full power all the time. Why would anyone think to themselves 'I know, I'll just get rid of some of the dust'?

A remote control would get lost within hours in anything but an anal retentive's workshop!

For a variety of reasons, not least being the wish to choose the most appropriate site for maximum effectiveness, many people are likely to have their air filter located somewhere where the on-board control panel is not easily accessible. Even in my small workshop, my filter is on a high shelf where I'd be more reluctant to switch it on if I had to dig out a step ladder each time I wanted to use it. The remote essentially makes any location an option however inaccessible.

As regards choice of speed, again there are a number of reasons why you might opt for something other than full power. In my case I use lower speeds, which mean less noise and less draught on me (small workshop issue mainly), when working with hand tools, and I use full power/speed when working with power tools that generate more dust and send it flying further afield even with dust extraction at source.

And Jet helpfully supplied velcro with a self-adhesive backing with mine, so you can easily locate the remote somewhere obvious and convenient. Even without using that though, if you use the filter, and therefore the remote, regularly then it is no more likely to get lost in the workshop than any other regularly used and valuable tool such as your measuring tape, etc.

I have a microclene and find it quite noisy, not hugely so but enough that I find myself only switching it on when really needed and avoiding it if I can, whereas it would almost certainly be better left on most of the time when bandsawing, on the lathe or whatever.

If I was buying again I would try the Jet ........

Cheers, Paul :D

To be fair the noise isn't that big a deal really. I have a twin brushed motor dust extractor so I have ear defenders on most of the time. I usually forget to take them off and frequently find myself at the bench hand plaining still wearing ear defenders and specs. When I've realised, I've always thought better that than forgetting to put the safety stuff on. I can see the advantage in the remote as I use one for the dust extraction. That said I have a spare plug socket for that remote kit so I could make it turn on remotely even if it didn't come with that feature. I'm intending on putting it up high which will mean running power to it. I could always install a pull cord (bathroom light kind of thing) of some description to turn it off and on if the remote packed in. Changing the speeds would be a problem though.l

I sent an email to [email protected] and [email protected] about the remote and timer on the Jet AFS-500 Air Filter and these are the replies :-

"I have spoken to Jet about this. There used to be a remote supplied with it, but it seems it either didn’t work properly or they had problems with it. Anyway, the remote isn’t supplied with it now. There is a timer device included. The AFS-1000 B has both timer and remote."

"The information on the Jet site is incorrect. It is has not been supplied with a remote control unit for a couple of years now."

I still think its a good unit so will be purchasing one today.

Yep it's true. Contacted Axminster today to order and the 500 now comes with no remote. What are JET thinking? They had no old stock either. Their dealer addresses are way out of date. Many had changed premesis and phone numbers and after ringing most of them I had no luck. After a lot of hassle I've think I've found an old model and it's being sent out. Time will tell if it's the right one. I'll let you know.

Thanks again for everyones help.

they are thinking that everyone will want the remote so upgrade to the more expensive model.

I have the bigger one with remote and to be honest if it did not have the remote I would not use it as much as it is 8 feet in the air and I cannot reach it without a step which is never conveniently located when I want it. Saw the comments about plug in timers etc whcih overcome the additional bonus that it has preset 2, 4 and 8 hour run on timer setting. It is one of the best things I have bought for my workshop. My lungs appreciate it.

Yeah Axminster tried to sell me the bigger one on those grounds. Not on really. I just don't have the room or the need for the bigger one. An annoying con.

I bet the AFS500 remote is the same as the AFS1000 remote. Just ring up Axminster and ask for a replacement remote, won't cost much I'm sure.

Edit: I was intrested so I rang up and asked. They don't stock them but can get them in would take about 3 weeks.

The mystery deepens. I ordered the AFS500 Tuesday night and it arrived this morning. Guess what I found in the box (bottom right)

A remote

So I sent this to the tekky who I had asked the original question.

Thanks for the information. Now I know you are the "technical" whizkid and I'm just a "humble" customer, so I'm baffled by the product that turned up this morning. Its a Jet AFS-500 Air Filter complete with a remote control unit (see attached photo). Now bearing in mind your comment "It is has not been supplied with a remote control unit for a couple of years now", I'm wondering if this unit has been sitting in your warehouse for two years or is a reconditioned unit?

I also spoke to David Ashworth of [email protected] whose reply was

"I have spoken to Jet about this. There used to be a remote supplied with it, but it seems it either didn’t work properly or they had problems with it. Anyway, the remote isn’t supplied with it now."

I look forward to your comments.

Perhaps they are breeding :D

Yes all very odd, like I said bought mine at Christmas and it had the remote with it.

Shultzy does it say on the outer box 'remote included' or similar? I only ask because I've ordered one from a supplier other than Axminster on the understanding that it will have one. He says it does but if it doesn't say on the box, I'm just wondering how he knows.

p111dom, there are only numbers on the box :-

PO No. B8 - 09492
Stock No. 708611M
C/No. A106 - A170

and there is no reference to a remote.

I had a reply from Axminster :-

The AFS500 we purchase from Jet to sell through Axminster is supplied as standard with no remote control. On occasion the factory may top up our stock with another batch, these will contain remotes. We do not and will not advertise this fact, it’s a nice bonus if you get one.

All of our warehouse stock is cycled properly through different locations so you will not have received an old unit.

I do not know who David Ashworth is or can comment on his stock. There has never been a problem with the remote, it’s the same one still supplied with the AFS1000.

So there you have it - Its a Bonus :D

Humm I thought that might be the case. So I'm wondering how they knew there was a remote in mine just by looking at the box??? More worrying is the fact that I ordered it on Wednesday and when I log into my account with the dealer it still sayd 'processing'. 8-[

Here's a question, my unit is cream but the catalogue shows it as white. Has anybody got a white one with a remote?

Some Axminster "White" machines are more cream than white, my AW106PT for instance, at the time I was not happy, but then I tried using it and I forgave it

Aidan

Even my JET stuff I would describe as off white when it looks very white in the calalogue.

Well it arrived today and....

Sucess!!! It's obvious the shop did what I asked ans opened the box up to check there was a remote. They even took the time to pop one of their shop stickers on the top of the filter while they were on so with that, I can give a recomendation to these guys. Not as quick as Axminster on the delivery front but that's to be expected given the distance. If anyone's interested they did say they had another one in stock with the remote.

Cheers
