Where to put the new workshop?

Hi ya all,

It's been a long time since I last posted due to our move to France and only having intermittent access to the interweb. However after what seems a lifetime but in fact has been less than 3 months we are safely installed in our new home.

We have more space here than I could have poosibly have dreamt of a few months ago which leaves me with a problem, perhaps a gloat.

Where shall I put the new workshop?

Plenty of space down here but it is underground and probably will be too damp

or perhaps here

or in here

Outside there is hard standing here

more hard ground here, seems a shame to loose the terrain de boule though

Plenty of room on the veg plot

Oh and what's this tucked away in the corner.

Needs a lot of work and will have to evict a few roosting birds etc from inside.
Progress is likely to be slow as there is plenty of work to do in the house first.

Welcome back Andy, nice property congratulations.

Not in the basement especially difficult to get machinery in, sheet goods and long boards in and out.Then you have to think will I be able to get this six foot wardrobe up the stairs and the noise when someone's watching the T.V. and if as you say it is damp it'll cost a lot to stop it, if at all.
Not that I've had any experience in this, much.

Good to have you back - seems a wonderful place you have there! My vote would be for the barn - for both space, character and natural light! Otherwise you could always rent it out to me and SWMBO - moving abroad will be on our list soon I think

definitely the last picture, nice big doorway to get things in and out as well. If you can sort out the damp without too much effort in one of the other rooms you may have a useful finishing room, which I think most of us only dream about,

I'd also go for the barn (assuming electricity supply is not a problem) - for all the reasons already mentioned,the noise factor,and having to go down the garden to get there would just feel better.

for most people finding a square metre to work in is a bonus, and you have tonnes of them :lol:

how about weekend rentals for all your new friends :lol:

the gazebo looks the best, and you can make your own chicken and bird boxes too 8)

i'd agree with most and say the last one, Looks like theres plenty of light and no trees blocking, i'd stick a coupld of big roof windows in it on the back as we see it for a load of natural light to work in.

the Barn definately shouts workshop, but a finishing room , a lathe room , a scrollsaw room and not to mention a timber (lumber) room....

Congratulations on your new place - looks wonderful.
I would suggest putting you new shop in the basement. With that old barn then stood empty I could put some of my spare tools in it........ :lol: :wink:

Hi Andy, welcome back

We moved three years ago and I had the same type of decisions to make. I had a room like your first picture, but with two small windows and it was once the cow shed :lol: I would not choose that if I were you.

I also had a two storey barn, a bit bigger but with big double doors (Like yours) and I could get three big windows where the other doors were so I went for that.

I had to put a big wood burner in 'cos it gets cold in winter here but that will probably not be a problem for you :lol:

I wish you all the best with the house rennovation and I certainly hope you don't encounter the type of workmen we have here

The house is hardly a renovation project, more a case of bad taste decor.

Bought a Honda today and took it for a spin around the garden, it tool over 90 mins to get round and the mountain of grass cuttings is nearly 4 feet high. I used to push the old ransomes around my back lawn in about 15 mins and empty the tiny box twice. I lost count how many 80 litre bags I emptied this afternoon. Oh how I miss the stripes.

That's 6 lawnmowers I have now, I am not a collector honest.

yep Dick we are north east of Caen on the route de Cabourg/Deauville, it's all paddocks and thorough bred trotting horses around here rather than orchards and cider presses.
