You don't say what brought about the visit from the official? I'm assuming you didn't invite him, so that surely means "enemy action" of some sort? If that is the case, then you have no idea what (if any) evidence has already been gathered or is in the process of being gathered.

If I was in your position, I wouldn't write another word about it publicly and I'd ask the Mods to remove this thread in case it's being used to "fan the flames." Good luck.

hi mailee

don,t you have the right to know what brought this about , even then they wont tell you who complained if anyone did , the only way i know of finding out is to let it go to court then the complainant will have to appear 8) , when most people know this that it's likely to go to court they usually drop all complaints for fear of reprisals , hope it don,t go that far for you, I think it's someone you know a neighbour a friend so if they are reading this to fan the flames as agree says against you.

to that person don't be an ar**H**e Do something good with your life your twisted . hc

The council will be the complainant I think, should action be taken which is very unlikely if you stick to hobby only. As far as the Machines and tools go, who are they to say what you need for your hobby? Keep them.
I had a similar situation, busy body neighbour, when I used to do up old bangers some years ago. It was purely hobby but the neighbour thought otherwise. Noise wasn't an issue as the garage was a long way from the houses. He was just being an pineapple. The council 'demanded' a letter from me stating that I would not conduct any business from home. They didn't get one. I told them it was up to them if they wanted to waste their time trying to prove I was running a business, which I wasn't doing. I didn't hear any more from them.
Now you've been 'busted' your only option is to find somewhere else to do the business side of things, bit of a pain but that's really your only option.

It is with this in mind that I would ask you to cease use of the shed for commercial use with immediate effect. You should also remove all tools that are consistent with the commercial use of the shed WITHIN 21 DAYS of the date of this letter.'

If you cease to use the shed for commercial purposes how can any tool be regarded as described here???

so the question on everyones lips is...

...what tools are you flogging off?

Well Lee, to quote Charlton Heston, (They will have to prise my tools from my cold dead hands) OK, so it was guns but the same applies.

Sounds like a difficult situation and you've probably been shopped by a neighbour or potential competitor. I'd do as others have said and work with the council, I'd also speak to CAB and/or seek professional legal advice

Whoever shopped you, wants you to give in and stop woodworking. So your life's mission is to make sure that doesn't happen ;) If you do find out it's a neighbour then setup a stereo to play loud music whenever you're not in the house :D

The website was to test the waters Chas as I envisaged unemployment on the horizon, I did explain this fact to the official who paid me a visit and he seemed happy with it. I did explain I have the loan of a workshop if need be but most of my work was to be on site and mobile. I have taken down the website after recieving this letter but as for the tools, they are my own personal hobby tools as many others have in their sheds? As a matter of interest I didn't recieve any interest in the website and no offers of work from it!

I think you will find this a difficult position from which to argue given that you have posted on the forum (and elsewhere?) for several years about commercial, paid work you have undertaken.

I would suggest asking which tools are considered commercial or see about registering as a commercial premises
