That’s quite something, I like that it closes up to preserve the carving, the only piece that I could contribute was a piece at an exhibition in Cheltenham? a good few years ago but I no longer have a photo. If anyone else has seen it they will remember it, a stunning 6 sided jewellery box with super intricate lids that closed to the middle to form a “crown” shape.
This sort of work brings you back to reality because it is pure skill all done by hand with no easy options but hard graft.
The most recognised bridge on The Backs in Cambridge; The Queens' College Mathematical Bridge is famed as an example of a perfect bridge – at least in engineering terms. The poetically recognised 'Mathematical Bridge' does not have an official name and is also known as 'The Wooden Bridge' or 'Queens' Bridge. Not a single piece of curved timber used in its construction.

A Norwegian stavkirke in 1984. My slides are buried away but I think it was Fantoft on the outskirts of Bergen. Interesting history to this one. It was moved to Bergen from Stavanger in the 1880's to save it, but it was burnt to the ground in the 1990's after our visit and rebuilt. The leader of a Norwegian black metal band was aquitted of this crime but convicted of arson of three other similar churches !

And the treatment of the bark/board transition just behind her shoulder. Something not quite right about the edge of the carving. Strongly suspect AI.
How could anyone burn down a stavkirk. So glad there are enough craftsmen available to rebuild them. Also, that explains so many on-line images of carvers replicating the door frames

bit of a cop-out but I’ve been “collecting “ images for a long while. Specifically of great woodcarvings, but I can’t pick a favourite.
Putting that image back through goole image search brings up this ....

Extra digits happen in Norfolk too. Usually toes I think. But somewhat suspicious!
