An acquaintance of mine has come by around 200 hammers of all shapes, sizes and age but has no idea what to do with them. Are there people who collect old hammers?

Yes, of course there are.

There are people who collect cutlery rests for crying out loud, in fact there are so many they have a society and a newsletter!

What would I do with them, show this computer who is boss. (hammer)

Sorry not very constructive, but as Bugbear said there are bound to be collectors, I think any item you could name, there will be a collector.

Take care.

Hmmmmmm are you a secret cutlery rest collector

Like most tools there is a vast range of hammer types many to specific jobs that would be very specialised, and this day and age hard to get and expensive if you can

Make a 3d massive hammer sculpture out of hammers then sell it on ebay for a few million. With the few million you've made invest in some new tools, perhaps a couple holiday homes and 3-4 nice cars. Send me what's left over ta ;)

Wow - 200 hammers! That's a lot of hammers.

My partner and I thought we had a problem when we moved house and realised we owned 8 lump hammers between us. We only took 4 with us to the new place and donated the other 4 to various friends. It's highly likely that after nearly 10 years in the new place we now have more than 4 lump hammers again. I honestly don't know where they all come from as I can't remember ever buying one. I think people give them to us, probably well concealed at the bottom of old tool boxes.

I'm not saying how many hammers of other types we have - there are several and they are all useful. One small one even has a pink handle and was marketed as "tools for girls"!

I am not admitting to how many axes we own - but I do know a man who is an axe collector (many of his axes do not currently have handles and are seriously vintage and probably valuable.)

As to quantities of other tools - well isn't it always said that the person with the most tools wins?

In my youth I worked for a tool merchants. I would have to collect about 200 various hammers every 2 or 3 weeks from Midland's forges/foundries.

Their tools had BB embossed in them.
Incidentally, a company called Linfords of Hollies Avenue Cannock supplied a lot of replacement handles for hammers and picks.
They also supplied police truncheons. Honest.
I know what you are thinking, that should be Letsbe not Hollies.
Right then back to the job

Some trades and crafts use hammers more than others. For some, shaped hammers are forming tools and finishing tools. It's quite possible that a well-established working silversmith might own 200 hammers, all different sizes, head shapes and weights, some with highly polished striking faces (planishing hammers). Some such hammers were only ever made in small quantities, and if of good make (Whitehouse, for example), may be sought after by current craftsmen.

Depending on what hammers you have, you may be sitting on a nice little earner.

If, on the other hand, you have a box of 200 rusty and beaten-up old claw hammers, some with broken handles, some with one claw broken off, you may not be sitting etc etc.

Try them out one by one on the head of somebody you don't like, keep the one that gives the best result - sell the rest, but not to the afore mentioned person.
