The tree looks like shungee (suan zhi), but could be something else. There's at least one plentiful reddish rosewood from China that isn't marketed here. Mujingfang uses it in planes and calls it Shungee. Google's inability to translate names into chinese and back makes it hard to find an identical tree.
Interesting trick with the cleaver - some kind of nonsense going on there to both make it not bite into the wood or split the disc.
Saws seem to have no trouble with it, too. Shungee looks interlocked to some extent, which may have something to do with the bouncing if there isn't trickery in that, too.
