hi all
think its time for me to up grade my coronet lathe.

what are my best options i have got about 5 or 6 hundred to spend.will i get some thing half tidy or should i save abit more.
thanks
andy

That sort of money there are any number of lathes worth getting. Certainly worth keeping you eye open on fleabay as there are some bargains that crop up. Between us all on here I reckon we have had most of the ones on the market and there's the pros as well who give great advice. Look for HP, swing over bed, bed length, and variable speed (electronic if possible). Fox have two in that price bracket, someone on her has got one, older Poolewoods, upper end Records, Sorby's. If you spot one that sounds good ask and I'm sure someone will give the lowdown

Hi

My advice for what its worth ,

1 , motor HP if poss minimum of 1 HP
2 , Cast iron if possible , nice and heavy
3 Variable speed
4 , Depending on what you mostly turn , Bowls . Spindle work ?

Most brands have good and bad models. You need to tell us your budget and what you want to turn.

Hi Andy,

You should be able to get something pretty sturdy for that sort of money. Electronic variable speed usually pushes the price up past £1000 but mechanical VS is still good.

My lathe is a Jet which is very good, Wivamac's have an excellent reputation as do Vicmarcs but they may be out of your range.

Many people rate the Record range but it sounds like they may be having a few problems with their Nova range at the moment. That said, I understand their customer service is excellent, as is that of Axminster.

Buy the best you can afford, best usually being heaviest (cast iron) and most powerful (min 1 hp) basicaly as Blister said!!

Just had a quick browse. There are a number of Myfords on there but don't think they would be much of an upgrade from your Coronet. Also a few geaduates and Wadkins bu outside your budget. These are the ones I can see that may be worth a look. The jet 'd be my favourite but depends on what the reserve is.

Jet, worth seeing what the reserve is, probably more than £500 though.

Nice lathe (CL3) with some good gear with it.

This Poolewood has also been around for a while. I think it's what Chas has.

Another CL3

These Fox lathes are supposed to be pretty good, someone on here has one.

Hope this helps

Pete

One thing that I don't think has been said yet. I would think that you have some chucking etc for your cornet. I would also try to find an upgrade with the same thread on the head stock. If different your budget for the lathe will be lower due to having to buy new thread fixings, chucks etc for your upgrade.

Just my opinion.

hi all

ok can i ask what you think of this.

its only been used a few times and the guy is in is eightys so he his getting rid of every thingg he got for £500. its the digital 1.

Andy, to me... ( and its just my opinion ) its way too light.

Its only 50Kg.... it'll never stand anything of any size at all... if its just oens you want to do, then probably be ok... but for any piece of wood with any mass to it at all, I'd not want to be in the same shed as it.

Just a tuppence worth, like ..... but for 500 roupees, you could get a heck of a lot more practical a machine .

hi all

just to let you all know went to just have a look at the flott lathe yesterday, and ended up coming away with it.
don't know what was the 50kg weight on leaflet was,but it was well over 100kg with out the bench.got it all set up last night and it runs sweet as a nut,the only thing was my bloody nova chuck would not fit.
done a search on here about inserts for m33 thread and decided not to do that,so i just ordered the patriot chuck this morn.
will let post my first thing with it soon.

Hi Andy,

Good luck with the new lathe. I've never heard of Flott, any chance of a photo or website please, I can't find anything?
