Scoffy, this thread is spiralling off into becoming a solvent discussion. However, Percy gave the best advice...plan A should be to use a heat gun, only if that doesn't work would you begin to think about solvents.

Agreed.

A little heat (even from a hairdryer if you don’t have a heat gun) works wonders for removing stickers. If you want to avoid residual adhesive, “peel slowly and see” :)

Also works for labels on LPs and foam surrounds on HiFi speakers.
 
It might be a completely different type of adhesive, but I remove the residual sticky mess when removing labels from my returned honey jars by spraying with an oven cleaning aerosol and letting it soak for a few minutes.
