Good evening everyone. I would like to ask forumers for recomendations for a decent scroll sawand what it might cost me. I am new to the hobby but have used a scroll saw before. I was recently given a new Titan which is what got me interested but it has proved to be a bit of a dog quite frankly (No disrespects to all the doggies) My first atempt resulted in the lugs breaking off of the blade. New blade fitted and now I discover that following a curved line is almost impossible I tried a simple pattern today. If you would allow me the benefit of your knowledge and experience and help me get over the disappontment of my first try I'll have another go. Best wishes.

Welcome. A forum search (search button at the top of the web page) will be your friend here as this question gets asked surprisingly often. Since you do not state your budget but rather ask us to provide one it makes things a little more difficult. As a good entry level saw the SIP gets alot of support, as a mid price saw take a look at the Axminster AWFS18, and if you have a big budget go for a Hegner. A better saw at a lower price can sometimes be had on e-bay, but the usual caveat emptor warnings apply when buying untested machines. As for price, the three I mention above will be somewhere around £80 for the SIP, £200 for the Axminster and £400+ for the Hegner depending on your model of choice. Good news is that the SIP will do almost everything the Hegner can in the same way a mini can do everything a mclaren mercedes can, but the merc is nicer to drive and has a better finish. Go much below the SIP price though and you are wasting your money on bad tools. Those prices are from memory by the way, but are roughly right.

Do a search, have a play with some if possible in stores or at a show, and go for it!

Steve

Hello I have the axminster had it for about 4 years and not a problem at all
I would recommend that you get the hegner blade clamps for it with the clock key and some good blades.

hope this helps you get what's the best for you

Hegner against anything else, despite the price. It is quiet, almost vibration free (you can balance a 50p coin on edge whilst cutting) accurate, easy to control, gives great results. Whatever you get, use a footswitch to leave your hands free. Fix a QR lever on the top blade mount. Don't use pinned blades, use good ones, e.g. Flying Dutchman. Fix a light nearby, sit down and saw. Enjoy.

Gentlemen I am overwelmed with all the good advice, thank you all very much indeed.

The tension screw on my school SFS24 has sheared. I do have the technology to repair it, but it is a pain. My Hegner of 35 years just keeps on going.
