I am looking to by a new bandsaw for my workshop. Has any one tried the Hammer bandsaw also what about the Startrite saws. I am looking for a floor mounted saw. What is the statrite 400 like..
Is the recod bandsaw any good.
thanks Alec

I've had the Startrite 401e (230v) for several months now and I'm really pleased with it. Using the correct blade, it breezed through some 140mm deep ash recently.

It doesn't have a quick-release tension lever but it probably has all the other features you would expect (rack and pinion table tilt, etc.). The only extraction port is down in the bottom corner of the base (nothing just below the table), which isn't ideal, in my opinion. This means that dust is likely to build up around the lower guides (unless, you come up with your own solution - as I have!).

For fine, detailed work and shaping of small or thin items, I find the table is a bit low - I forget the actual height from the floor but it's at least 2in less than 900mm (which is ideal for ripping large sections of timber). Blade guides, etc. are relatively easy to adjust, except for the lower thrust bearing, which requires you to squeeze and turn a 10mm spanner in a confined space (all the other guides are tool-free and easily accessible).

I can't think of anything to add right now but, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

The Record models don't look too bad but I believe the Startrite saws are another step up. It depends on what you want to do and how often you intend to use your saw.

I have a record 350s and am well pleased with it recently was sawing 8'' deep walnut stock with a tuffsaws 1/2 m42 blade nice straight cut with ease.
