Bodrighy - that's a nice piece of work. You must have been sweating shaping that spindle down.

Jenx - I'm thinking specifically of boxes, where you want the lid and the base to come from the same piece and 'flow'. You would have to do that first, as both ends have to be rechucked for hollowing. The other thing that concerns me is that, say you're doing a goblet and start hollowing it first, you've got quite a large workpiece supported just on the headstock. While I would tackle almost anything attached to a faceplate with screws, my lovely expensive scroll chuck just doesn't inspire me with confidence. Work moves in that thing.

Cornucopia George did a brilliant 'walk thru' on Boxes .. I'll see if I can find it.

If you can.. bring your tailstock up to 'support' the work, for as long a period as possible..

In some instances, you can stuff a rag or a soft kiddie's ball into the workpiece to help support it on the T/S end... hang fire and I'll try to find Corny's 'show & tell' .. its good...
will come back with it in an 'edit' hang on ! .......

EDIT : -- Blast it, I can't find it !.
Maybe he'll know himself exactly where it is and be able to assist when he appears.
A thought - I recall feeling similarly about my chuck and holding spindles. especailly 'unsupported' from the other end ones ...
I don't know if others will agree... but ( there's always a but !! heh heh )...
I am a big believer in giving the chuck a really good quality tenon to hold on to. I never let it hold 'square ends' ( or I never let it hold square ends any more  - read into that what you will :p ).. the Tenon doesn't have to be huge in length, a little stub with the jaws butting up against the shoulders of where the stock is 'larger' is ideal.. but make sure its a decent dovetail ( tapered as per the inside of the jaws ), and of a size where the chuck is at its 'most circular'.. thus ensuring the best quality 'hold' on the wood.
The chuck shouldn't let go... should have a great 'hold'.
( assuming its not 'telegraph poles' you're asking it to keep control of ).

I should add some words to that :

Square
Blunt
Too Fast
Clumsy
Minor catastrophe
Face
Impact
Pain
Bruise
Much, much fear

it won't be too difficult to fill in the blanks  :p

Hopefully someone will be able to lead you back to Cornucopia's Lesson on Boxes shortly.. it really was very very good. :D :D

'Edit again' .. Just to 'cover myself' in case of a potential "gary glitter faux pas ".. a Soft Kiddies Ball is like a tennis ball type of thing.

Shaping the spindle isn't as difficult as you would think as long as you use sharp tools and take very fine cuts. As said stuff the bowl with paper towele and bring the tail stock up until it just starts revolvomng. Don't do it any tighter or the stem will bend as it gets thinner. I also tend to go a bit slower as it cuts down on the whipping effect. This one is 4mm thin and 9" long.

If you want to see really thin I think that there is an article in Woodturning on 'trembleurs', these are the really skillful things.

I think he deleted a lot of his posts while he was having a down day - hopefully i'm wrong but that may be why you cant find it.

by the way my approach to the soft ball thing was to get one of those spongy tenis balls (the sort schools use for indoor tenis) and cut a cross in one site so that it can be impailed on a live tail centre.

For supporting the cups of goblets while doing the stems rather than stuffing the cup with rag, I made a wooden dome that fits on the revolving centre in the tailstock and pushes up on the goblet cup holding it central(this was born out of necessity when making really big goblets where rag just didn't work and the tailstock extension wouldn't reach)

God bless forums (fora  ) - what a brilliant idea. I'm going out shortly and I'll get one. Kids balls thin on the ground in this house.

Thanks all for your suggestions.
