Hi folks well I have finally started my first ever piece of woodwork, and already have a couple of problems but before I get to those ..I will talk you through where I am at the moment I have sourced a piece of what I was told was Oak for free,so with that in mind I decided I would try to make a bedside table with a draw in the top....If you knew how bad I am at DIY you know that this is probably not gonna turn out too well....

The wood below is my first problem because I thought it was OaK I reckoned on putting a Oak top on it sourced from a timber yard....BUT some folks tell me its not Oak so that leaves me with a Top problem as it were..see below..

I want to taper the legs on one side (inside face) and have not yet decided what types of joints to use, possible dowels or pocket hole , accurate m&t are out of my league at the minute..

The draw will be dovetails and the table will have pelmit of timber cut from existing wood above..

Now as I say these are Big ideas and nothing else until finished #-o

I have today cut and planed my legs and cross pieces so at least I have made a start...I will hopefully update with pics later...Any tips ideas etc ? will be welcome.

Dave

Good luck with your first project - without knowing exactly what tools you have at your disposal it is a bit difficult to offer advice on the construction methods.

From the picture you have posted I think you will find that the timber is elm!

If your happy to tackle dovetails then surely M&T are a walk in the park, just my view :)

Hi Rog

That seems to be the concensus that it is Elm....ah well I may put the legs and stuff ive done already to one side and source some Oak and carry on from there..
