Liberon wax has been my past preferred wax for so many years I haven't considered anything else. It does take a bit of elbow grease.

Is there anything else nowadays that doesn't smell like a petrol refinery?

I have a hankering to do some faux panelling in oak and oak veneered ply, and to finish some Ikea Billy bookshelves.

(Does anyone remember a wax furniture polish that smelt of lavender? Mother's scullery cupboard would smell of the dusters...)

There are a few 'lavender waxes' on the market, I have never used them but if you are after nostalgia Antiquax might fit the bill, it will if nothing else be a good quality wax polish. The best all round wax I use is Harrell's made by W.S. Jenkins in Tottenham, I find it better than Liberon wax but there is not much in it, if you are after a high build wax then you can't beat Briwax but it does stink and it is hard work. The best wax for ease of application is Renaissance Wax, it goes on easily, buff effortlessly and gives a lovely satin sheen.

I have always used Antiquax but was unaware that they did a Lavender one, last time I came across a Lavender wax was at School about 60 years ago, we were given a small tin each to polish our desks with, I had completely forgotten about that so thanks for the memory!

The 4 I have are definitely veneered, I am leaving them with the house fitted into an alcove. I have noted the word 'still' in your question, may be worth a trip to the Exeter branch to check before I order some more from the Glasgow branch. Thanks!

There is a product called antiquax , they do a polish that is scented as you say

Yes deffo try before you buy. I started tidying out our box room in October and ordered several. IMHO these are plastic overprints.

Sadly I left 8 bookcases in the ‘library’ of my last home which were veneered. Shame was the new owners ripped out the lot as they converted the room into granny’s bedroom.

Time will tell if they stand up to time. The fittings have changed slightly.

Fiddes Supreme Wax Polish is worth considering. It gives the same result as Liberon but without the smell.

After mjWard’s gorgeous home library my box room was not worthy of posting. Plus I get distracted practising beads and coves…

Anyway, I do have some offcuts from the Billy B’s and I can happily send you a sample to look at if that saves you the torment of the winding path of despair. I recall they sell packing boxes, so maybe the journey wouldn’t be totally wasted.

Workshop heaven sell Alfie Shine, the smell for me is amazing.
