Evening all...

Need too know what too use on a solid oak dish drainer i've made, too waterproof it.. as it stands i've done nothing too it..

Ta...

Scouse.

I'm sure mailee made something like this recently... He's be the one to ask!

Hi Scouse, yes I did but all I used was some vegetable oil. It hasn't really waterproofed it as some tanning has appeared from the steel of the pots. I would think a better idea would have been to seal it instead of using an oil although I am not sure if this would have broken down after a while.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :?

Oxalic acid will get rid of the steek marks.

I don't think any finish as such will work on oak in this situation for very long. The best bet is probably a regular coat of vegetable oil; at least once a month and and probably more frequently. The words rod and back come to mind.

Is that the Aquacote that used to be sold by Barfords? Is so, my experience is that it definitely will not stand up to that sort of exposure to water.

I don't know. Different spelling maybe?

It's going to get bashed and abraded as well as wet, so I don't think any coating is going to last very long. If you must, then an oil can be recoated without sanding back (which would be a major pain in the fundament), unlike a varnish, acrylic or otherwise.

i made on over the sink chopping board out of some oak ktichen top.

I just stuck it in a low oven fro a while and covered it in walnut oil. Repeat until bored. ITs been fine and regularly get soaked from washing veggies.

Oak is very durable, I wouldn't fret too much

Sounds like a good plan to me; certainly better than any sort of surface coating.
