Hi

This was turned from an offcut from my kitchen worktop - American Black Walnut. OK, not exactly free, but next best thing!

Thanks folks - looking at the pictures I see the square rim has got a bit thin in the centre - I'll try again tomorrow.

I do like the way the pattern in the bowl suggests the opposite direction to the grain.

IMHO one of the hardest things to turn is a flat surface. You have done well with this. How's your knuckles?

well done-its extremley hard to 1.- do a flat surface and 2. keep and even edge- you've done great :) how thick is your worktop and what finish are you/they gonna apply on it?

As it was finished worktop, I only had to clean up the top surface with the gouge, then I used a horizontal belt sander after the turning was done. The worktop is 1 1/2" thick, made from 5" planks biscuit jointed. It looks terrific but is probably not the most practical worktop you could have. Comes from a chap called Stephen in Barnsley, who I see is now selling offcuts on ebay - SP woodworking I think - very nice chap.

Very nice piece :D
If the worktop is 1.5" deep, how long is the piece? Guessing about 7" ? (Somehow, the pictures seem to make it look a lot bigger)

i agree- it looks allot bigger- i would have guessed 3" deep!! but its 1 1/2" !! its all in the perspective i assume

nice wood - and nicely done though i'm not a fan of square edged bowls - in my opinion it would look nice just as a round bowl - but thats just my prejudice.

Doesnt swmbo have problems with you hacking lumps off the kitchen worksurface to turn tho :D
