Walnut bowl

Well I'm still hard at it, I just can't get enough lathe action lately :lol:

I'm still fiddling with my chunky bowl design,I had a piece of walnut given to me thats started to go too soft so I hacked the heart wood out and made another heavyweight. I did a bit more with the rim design this time, although the main picture doesn't show it at all well (artificial light and me don't make for good piccys).



Close up of the rim gives a better idea of the effect.


SWMBO snuck up to the shed with the camera as I had the double doors open to let some of the damn heat out, so heres a picture of me Walnut shavings flying,wearing my Sunday best :lol: (thank God she didn't get the shed floor in :lol: )

I quick like chunky and that bowl is a nice one.

But I think, looking at the picture of you turning that you are due a warning about your tool usage. :shock:
It looks to me that you are turning a bowl with either a roughing or a large spindle gouge, that is not good practise. Bowl gouges are very much stronger than roughing and spindle gouges, to cope with the forces of cutting across the grain. There is a real danger of the gouge bending or snapping if you should happen to get a catch. :twisted:

Dave, in the pic I'm just roughing down the cylander which will become the bowl to get past some cracks, I'm not turning end grain, I just sort of turned it in bits to see how far in the cracks went, i.e the end couple of inches, then the middle etc, its all cutting with the grain side on as in spindle work. You can make out the steps if you look carefully.
All shaping and hollowing of bowls is done with my trustly Sorby half incher and the occasional scrape with a scraper if its being a bugger to get a finish.
I may do things wrong, I must admit I've never read a book, took a lesson or anything like that.....

Using a spindle gouge on the outside of a bowl is acceptable. The danger is when there is too much of the tool overhanging the rest. Inside you inevitably go further over the rest and you are right it is dangerous. When I first started turning I had a set of cheap tools that I had been given. the roughing gouge literally bent at right angles at the tang. Lesson learned fast :shock:

Thanks for the kind comments ladies and gents

LW the finish is undiluted celulose sanding sealer rubbed on by hand off the lathe then buffed with a cloth which is a bit less shiny and then woodwax 22 over the top buffed again by hand, which gives this nice sheen which still feels really smooth.
