I've recently rebuilt my bench with 6x2 timber top.

So I now have an 8" deep apron..

My vice is a 9" faithful QR vice, which has a typical L shaped rear mounting casting. How do I fit it with out affecting the strength of the apron? Do I cut a hole for the casting and bars?

Or should I make a moxon style vice with 16mm threaded rod and star nuts 63mm diameter?? Might be better for dovetails!!

I'm aware I'm not all that experienced yet so find it difficult to communicate confidence but;

I'm cutting holes in my apron for the screw and bars. my apron forms the leading edge of the workbench so it's effectively 3x10". the posterior face of the vice is inset into the workbench and the rails and screw fo through 3 holes in the apron.

edit the posterior vice inset is clear well enough of worktop to allow loads of flattening / repair

this does mean I loose some depth of vice to accomplish this but I've worked out this won't cause any issues for my requirement and always in control of this by planing the apron back if needed.

I could also keep it flush against the apron or with some bolt in threads install temporary hardwood lips 💋 on both faces.

pic is marking holes in apron.

sorry @Jameshow I've since realised I went through three iterations before deciding how to mount the vice. fortiitous discuisson if both of us are refining concepts....

whichever way, I wanted to hide the front face top portion a little like the version I made for the temporary one whilst I got into woodworking but with an extended cowl if you like:

for the current project I toyed with carving out a section for the vice from the apron (this was before i enlgarged the dimensions from 2x4 to 3x5):

or as a cutout in the main slab for the back face

which I've since filled in as I've decided to site it onto the apron. the thinking there is that could potentially change it out in the future to a hardwood apron / moxon/leg vice and the apron could be theoretically removable

so I've marked out the holes and just need to now mark the back face inset but sit it below the apron top *benchside* so as to allow flattening of the top whilst retaining flush, canted vice faces

like a better version of this
