Some on here might disagree with using contact adhesive but I know of no reason why you should not experiment with it. My first attempt at veneering was a chessboard using two types of wood veneer (dark and light) which I taped together using a quality masking tape and then stuck down as one complete unit using contact adhesive. Took a while to match every piece up but worked quite well as an introduction to cutting and handling veneer. All I used was a small tin of contact adhesive, glue spreader, masking tape, box of veneer off cuts, stanley knife, block plane, shooting board and ply for the board.
If you try it just make sure the contact adhesive is spread evenly and thinly with no lumps.
