I was watching a woodie prog on sky acouple of weeks ago, ad the chap was veneering using very wide veneer that had a backing holding it all together.
He put contact adhesive on the backing, and the wood then just rolled it out.
It looked easier than using bits of sticky tape.
Does anyone use this, and where can you buy it?

Often known as flexi-veneer, most of the panel suppliers that sell veneered boards will have it. Its a lot easier than trying to edge join long pieces.

To add to what jasonB said/ Although applying 'seems' easier (this is very relative) and definably is quicker, the choice of wood species is more limited. Also the manufacturer has decided for you how to match and layout the grain of the veneers, often not very much thought has gone into deciding.

Using contact adhesive has the drawback that the glue bond will fail earlier and the final project is more prune to damage especially at the corners as the glue layer is quite thck and flexible.

Using formaldehyde glues, hide or PVA give much better durability results.

The flexi veneer can be quite expensive £50 - £60 per sheet for standard species such as oak walnut maple etc. The equivilant price for veneer that you join yourself would be £7.50 - £12.50. You obvioulsly have the problem of jointing and seaming to take into account.

It is relatively easy to prepare the edges of the veneer with a plane and shooting board or even a router and straight edge. I have made a 2.5m long shooting board which i use with a no. 7 plane to edge the veneer up to 24 sheets at a time.

Can PVA be used to glue then, didn't know that.

Basic veneers are pretty cheap, even for the smaller buyer. For example basic ash or beech veneers are usually about £7 per leaf, like this,

The prices from original marquetry are still a little high. If you buy from a veneer merchant in full bundles (usually 24 or 32 leaves per bundle) you can expect to pay around £2.50 £3.50 per square metre 25p - 35p per sq ft for timbers such as beech, ash, american oak etc and a little more for walnut and cherry maybe £4 - £5 per square metre. If you buy bigger quantities you can get it quite a bit cheaper than that. All prices are ex vat as well.
