veneer sheets

Still on the strip laminated boomerang project...

I've decided to keep the 5mm strips but I'd like to put thin, dark strips between them. Someone on a boomerang list suggested veneer strips would be ok as they would bend without steaming.
I need strips ~70cmx3cm of something dark, about 1mm thick and it doesn't matter about a fancy grain (as it'll only be seen from the edge).

Anyone know where I can get such a thing. I've found somewhere local that sells large sheets for £30 which are adhesive backed, but I've been told to avoid this and just get plain veneer.
