variable speed upgrade to coronet 2?

How easy would it be to mod a coronet 2 to variable speed drive? Of the options I can think of, off the top of my head are: 1) adjustable pulley 2) dc motor and variable resistor 3) 3phase motor & vfd.

Opinions, ideas...

Record (who took over Coronet) produced a variable speed upgrade kit for their CL2 & CL3 lathes.
Whether it will fit & whether you can find one in stock, I don't know but the part number was VSLK (Variable Speed Lathe Kit).

haycock will [almost certainly] do a converter and it is probably not too difficult to fit, but I would expect it to cost a lot. I enquired about one for my jet, consisted of a motor and controller and was £600-700 from memory. I didn't pursue because it wasnt worth it to me.

it may be as cheap to buy a secondhand vs lathe.
