In Sketchup, how do I use the Arc tool to cut an arc across several components? It works fine on individual items but not with multiple ones.

I think I know what you mean. You can copy (Ctrl+C) the arc you've drawn, then open the component you want to edit and choose Paste in Place from the Edit menu. Unwanted part of the arc and do your Push/Pull or whatever.

Open the next component for editing and repeat the paste in place thing. Continue until you've edited all of the components.

The point of making components is to keep discreet parts separated. That does mean, though, that geometry drawn outside the component's "wrapper" won't affect the geometry inside.

If you need an illustration, let me know and I'll draw up a quickie.

I decided to go ahead and draw something. Is this the idea?

Dave,

That is exactly what I am trying to do, but it won't work for me. When I choose paste in place command and then try to push/pull it wants to push/pull the whole components.

Steve,

Here is my diagram with the arc drawn:

Up at 5:00 am every day. I used to think my father was nuts for getting up so early. Now I'm him. :)

With version 7, if you are pasting the arc inside the component and the arc intersects both vertical edges, the face should be divided. If that isn't happening zoom in close and check that the arc is indeed intersecting the edges of the "board."

Make sure too that the arc is lying on the faces of the boards. If it's not, it won't intersect.

One more question. Is it possible you have nested components and aren't getting all the way in to the geometry.

If you want, send me the SKP file and I'll take a look. If you need my e-mail address, let me know.

This is driving me to distraction :(

Sometimes I can make it work and sometimes it just refuses to do what I want.

I have tried doing it with several components that are all copies from one original and it consistently refuses to work.

I then tried it with a new document, first with one component - works okay.

Then added another component (not a copy) works okay. I added 10 discrete components and it works okay.

So the problem seems to be when I am working with components that are copies of each other, it appears to confuse the program (or me :? )

I then tried making discrete components but making a rebate joint between two pieces and then I have problems again.

I was going to give you a picture but it will have to wait. Photobucket is down for maintenance :(

See you later, I'm going for lunch

regards

Brian
