I have a project where I need to bore 3mm holes at 10mm intervals very precisely. I am drilling through 40mm of ash and the holes go all the way through at exactly 90 degrees.
I am currently using a jig with a 10mm guide bush, so the router slots into the measured 10mm holes and I use a trend 3mm doweling bit to drill. can get very accurate results but the problem is the bit just isnt long enough. I have to finish the peice by either drilling through by hand or giving a second pass with the router minus the jig.
Basicly what I need is a longer bit or a 1/4 inch chuck I can fit a drill bit to and use with a router. Any ideas?

I understand the cons of using drill bits with routers but think i will be ok on the lowest speed and will peck rather than going through in one go.

Thanks in advance,

What's wrong with a drill press?

If you don't have one, will your electric drill fit into the plunge mechanism of your router? That works for shallow holes such as shelf-pin sockets.

The following link might help :

HTH John :)

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I have tried with a drill press but its nowhere near accurate enough. I would need a very expensive drill, maybe some second hand phase3 machinery but its not an option.
Im pretty sure there is no 3mm bit long enough but I'm sure there must be a chuck that fits into my 1/4" router that will let me use a drill bit.
the search continues.......

Hi,

You need a adaptor making either 1/4" with a 3mm hole ot 1/2" with a 3mm hole, like a 1/2" to 1/4" one for router bits.
I have a 1/2" to 10mm and a 1/2" to 6mm so I can use milling cutters in my routers, a local engneering shop will make you one from 1/2" or 1/4" silver steel. You needs some saw cuts so it will clamp the bit.
