Slip on locknuts are invaluble in any situation where you use studding, in particular with the Woodrat mitre box. A joined-together pair of "nuts", which can be slipped onto threaded rod at any point, and locked in position with half a turn (it is not necessary to slip the nut over the end of the rod) Hard to describe, you can easily see how they work at Screwfix.com

The nuts are much bigger across flats than standard metric nuts and so easily tightened and locked by hand (or spanner of course). Assembling or adjusting the mitre box is now quick and easy, no more fiddly nut running! These nuts are also useful as quick adjusting backlash free stops in woodrat or other jigs.
I don't know who makes them; they're just stamped "slip on locknut patented", see Fixings and Fastenings in the Screwfix catalogue p 58.
