I just wonder, is s***fly for real, or is it just some wind up posting by some disgruntled member?

George, I like the curves, but as you say just need balancing out, and very well turned. I LOVE the walnut, one of my favourite timbers at the moment. You say it was wet, is that from a local tree? Looks like it must be English and not the American Black. the grain is wonderful Must have been a good size tree to get it out that size without sap wood.

one other observation george

have you considered doing one in two contrasting woods ? i did one a while back in sycamore and yew which looked the mutts nuts (and sold for a three figure sum as i recall)

unfortunately i dont have any photos - but it was basically creamy sycamore in the body with a yew funnel neck

I did also try a second one where i "hancockised" the neck with a fret saw but i couldnt get the wall thickness even enough for this to work properly

George,

Like them both - although I do like spalted woods I think the walnut has the edge. I wish I could get anywhere near this.

As for S***fly, congratulations - you have managed to derail YET ANOTHER thread with your oafish pomposity.
The perfect troll, winds everybody up, gets what all sad trolls want - attention - but doesn't do anything which would be cause for immediate banning.
Cheers, your're a credit to your breed.

In a lot of forums (fora?) there is the facility to "Ignore" people.
Does this forum have this facility or, if not, can it be turned on by the administrators?

soulfly is not to blame for derailling the thread.

I often think its a bit like fishing, some fish know the hooks are there and choose not to bite others just can't resist. I would advise you all to resist in future- the fisherman will soon get bored and move on.

all the best

of course if the hook wasnt there in the first place the innocent fish wouldnt bite - so you could say that the fisherman is to blame.

however you have a point that it is best not to feed trolls - eventually they will scurry off to find a nice tender goat elsewhere ( tho it is sometimes necessary to discuss their points especially if they are errant rubbish)

Back on topic - how are you joining the two pieces george - I realise that they must be glued but i'd be interested in what glue you use as ive had some adhesive failures with both pva and ca with the top flying off during final finishing - much to its detriment.

the top is turned and finished before the base- at this point the base is rough shaped to give an idea of form, then the base is turned- then the top grain is lined up and a spot of ca is added. with this method wet wood can be used as in the walnuts case and the joint moves together and stays tight.
teh beech vase was quick maybe 90mins all in. the walnut is perfect apart from teh neck joint, if that joint was like the beech vase joint imo that would have been a lovely piece. the walnut was turned slower maybe 4 hours all in.

I cannot agree more, life's too short to get wound up by any perceived insulting/derogative remarks. As a forum we are all allowed our personal opinions, but no one has to take any notice of them. Thankfully!

Then of course I stand amongst the accused by answering this part of the thread. #-o

.

ahh i see , i have been using a different method
i) rough turning the outside of the whole form as one piece,
ii) then parting the neck from the centre, hollowing both bits and finishing the interior surface,
iii) then sticking them back together,
iv) and finally truing and finishing the outside (with the base in a chuck and the neck supported on a tenis ball on the tail centre)

this works okay and allows for a more sweeping form but has the serious downside that it puts the glue joint under a lot of stress - hence the fly offs. The next one I do i'll try your way instead. ;)

your method sound better for visualising the whole piece--its always a problem for me tyring to visulise the whole form, i also struggle when doing a normal vase because of leaving the bottom third untouched for strength whilist hollowing then when hollowed trying to finish the curve on the outside of. but if it was easy there'd be no fun would there?

I dont generally bother with this either - I just turn the outside then hollow the inside ( I sometimes put as bit of inner tube arround the form for added support if the wood is friable) - mind you that said most of my one piece forms are somewhat smaller than yours.
