TV out on graphic card

Hi all

Anyone able to help with this.....I've set up my computer to record from the tv card it has onto a new hard drive so I can get rid of tapes. The problem is that when I connect the computer to the tv via an S-video cable from the graphic cards the picture on the tv is almost totally devoid of colour. Do I need a newer telly?

Any advice/information gratefully received.

You could have the computer output set to NTSC rather than PAL.

Same thing on our telly, I'm sure it'll be different on yours, but in order to get svideo in colour I have to go into a menu and set 'EXTERNAL' to 'S-VIDEO' instead of 'AV'. This is on an oldish Philips TV.

Thanks, Slimjim - I had it set for PAL - I think the problem is probably along the lines of bodgermatic's. Sadly my telly doesn't seem to have a menu that allows me to change the external input from AV to S-video. So back to Maplins tomorrow to return the 10 metre lead i bought today!

Do you have an option on the tv card software to change from S-Video input to Composite video? A S-Video lead can carry either.

Hi Daz
The card I'm using lets me do this - it's an nvidia 6200. I'm going to try with a shorter lead and take back the 10metre one I got from Maplin. That might make a difference.

I presume you tried adjusting the TV out colour/contrast etc on the nvidia settings?
I had the same problem on my laptop TV out, no matter what I tried a long cable was rubbish but short cables are fine.
So now I use a video sender connected to the laptop, no hassle with cables.

I've tried all the nvidia controls I can find! A video sender sounds interesting though - which one do you use? I'd be grateful for some mroe information.

I've had a Thomson VS360 for last 3 years which I bought from argos. Most the time it's connected to the TV in the living room, occasionly it's unplugged and used in the kids bedroom TV.

Tesco do a technika (own brand) for £28, if you want to just try it out buy one from tesco and if it doesn't work on your setup you can take it back and get a refund.

My sender and others that I've seen have composite input so your need a s-video to composite convertor connected to the TV out, you may have one that came with your nvidia.
Audio input on my sender is phono's so I have a stereo 3.5 jack to phono's lead.
It also has IR remote sending.

Don't know what you are using to do the recording, but have a look at gbpvr.com for a great (and free) piece of software

thanks for the extra information, jeff - very helpful. I 'll have a look in Tesco - that price is cheaper than the lead was!
Armaille - yes I am using gbpvr - took me a while to get my head around working the epg but that's working now so recording is very straightforward.
