Hi folks

I recently invested in a Workcentre 2000, to go with my heavily discounted B&Q Triton saw. I liked the portability of the 2000 - great for site work.

And then I thought that a sliding table would be good. The Maxi. Able to size 8' x 4' sheets - excellent! Except, when it arrived, the footprint of the thing is bloody massive.

So, a quick call to Triton Tools (excellent customer service), and a pair of ex-display rails for the Mini sliding table were on their way to me. Great, thinks I. Use the Mini rails for crosscut upto 2'. Use the Maxi rails for bigger goods. The rails are interchangeable, and the Maxi's table will fit onto the Mini rails.

And therein lies the problem. I am using the table off the Maxi, but when it is used on the Mini rails, you can't get a crosscut of 600mm. Only 550mm - not what I wanted !

Suppose i'll just have to invest in a mini sliding table as well. The shop will be full of Triton gear at this rate  Unless anybody has experience of being able to modify things?

Hope Argee's on duty tonight......

Cheers

The only way I could see a modification being possible is to use the Mini table's short extrusions in the Maxi table (on Mini rails). That would be such a pain - and you'd need to rebuild the sliding fence every time you needed a change - I don't think it would be practical in the long run.

You could lock the table and use its fence parallel to the blade for extended cross-cutting, although, of course, the table wouldn't slide - defeats the purpose, but I can't think of another way.

Another forum I contribute to gave a link to this site, which shows an home-made alternative if you want to go down that route.

I've got the Maxi and although I've got the space, I often set it up outside anyway - nice to work in the fresh air. :)

Ray.

thanks for the replies fellas.

I will probably buy the mini table as well - its crosscut capacity will suffice for 90% of my work, so will be worth the investment. Perhaps should have gone that road to start with, but that's another story.

WiZeR - just joined ubeaut to give my 2pence.

Karl,
I have the Maxi table and, you're right, it has a fairly large footprint. If I clear the workshop floor I can get it set up ok but it fairly fills up my work space. Because of this I have made up a cross-cut sled that runs on the inner (fixed) rail of the maxi. I bought a set of inner rail bearings from TritonToolsand mounted them on the bottom of a piece if 12 mm ply. The bearings were actually mounted on a length of 2 x 4 (the bearings need to be morticed into the 2 x 4 to get them to sit flush) to get them up to the table height. With a fence set square to the blade on the trailing edge of the sled I can cross-cut more than 600 mm. I have added a stick-on scale and a stop block for repeat cuts. I made the sled oversize and trimmed it on the first pass so that a pencil mark on the workpiece aligned with the edge of the sled would be cut spot-on. I hope the description is adequare as it's too cold to go out and take photos.

Hi All, seems we are all popping down to Oz now and then. I am not certain but I think Devon Woody had a hand in the sled Ray linked to!

Regards Tom

I don't think Woody had anything to do with Bob Jager's sled but he posted the original idea I used in building mine. I'll try and find the link and post it later.

edit; Here is the link to the Aussie forum thread. I made my sled bigger, with the fence pushing the workpiece through the blade. I can easily square up kitchen cabinet sides (570 mm) with it.
