Does anyone else use the Trend sharpening system?

I know it's a bit numpty but I get quick razor sharp results.

However, recently I'm getting plane blades sharp but out-of-square with the side.

Is anyone else gettng this or am I a mega-numpty?[/url]

Right, I'll take a punt seeing as folks who actually own this seem thin on the ground.

a) Is it all blades, or just some? If just some, are their sides parallel? If not, could it be you've swapped which side of the jig (and thus the blade) you're referencing from?

b) Any grit or debris stopping you referencing the blade cleanly against the side of the jig?

c) Ditto for the diamond stone being seated properly in its part of the jig?

d) Ditto again for the moveable carriage running smoothly?

e) Has the runner between the blade holder and the moveable carriage worn? Is there some slop there?

f) Are the diamond stones still in good order and not worn in one area, thus sharpening unevenly?

Um, s'all that comes to mind, and all with the understanding I've never seen one of these things in the flesh, never mind used one.

Cheers, Alf

Thanks Henning but they're not too useful, thanks though.

Cheers Alf, you're an absolute star!

I think your point a. could be the thing, I'll check!!!

Coupla' things on sharpening square;

1) old bench plane blades are often slightly tapered, which make even defining square, let alone achieving it, a little more interesting

2) If the frog surface is slightly twisted w.r.t. the sole, the blade must be slightly off square if the edge is to protrude parallel to the sole (which is the actual goal, of course).

Point 2 is especially important in low bedding angle planes, where the effect of any twist is magnified.
