I am looking to buy a centre punch. My first one. Take a chance? There's loads to choose from on Amazon--pretty cheap. Do the cheap ones last? To be used on wood / metal / plastic. What make do you use and would recommend?

I have no idea what make mine is but have had it for over 25 years. Came as a set with 3 nail punches. Was not expensive. If you do a lot of metal work then search out a good one but for general shed work a modest one should do. Perhaps from a hardware place rather than Amazon. There is cheap and too cheap. They can be sharpened too.

John

Metal and plastic, use a spring loaded centre punch. Eclipse or a generic.
Wood, I'd want an awl or bradawl, not a centre punch.
Yes a nail punch might be useful too if you use small pins and want to sink them below the surface after hammering in.
