Experianced today as did many others, heavy rain which due to some localised flooding meant a diverion. The diversion took me past a tool supplier I sometimes use to purchase wood moulding planes by post so, I called in.

I was like a kid in a sweet shop.

Now what made you think I bought something?

O.K. then just between us I purchased these

Its an industrial shed just off the A24 between Worthing and Horsham the shop floor is mainly engineering machines lathes, milling drills and the like. One third of the width is dedicated to old tools. I first came across them at the Bentley Wood Show which they travel the country attending shows. They must have been at a show yesterday because a van load of boxes were stacked just in the entrance. I have occassionally rung them for a specific request to which they have obtained and posted arriving next day. This is the first time I have visited and now I know where it is will call more often.

Heres another view to the other side. You can see the machines through the glass. They do woodworking machines as I did see a Bandsaw.

Ah, them - I should have realised. They list some stuff on ebay at prices that generally look reasonable if you want something specific but not low enough to count as bargains. But your pictures confirm that there is more stuff to browse through in the shop than they get round to listing. One to file away for the next time I happen to be passing through Sussex with an hour to spare. That's not happened yet but maybe it will one day.

Hi Andy, in your thread for the Victorian steps I asked you where you purchased your tools from and you responded with you buy them from ebay so,
I looked up ebay and noted there were a number of planes for sale referenced Ashington. I thought this was the same guy I bought from at Bentley. I discussed this with with G & M as I required a No 2 hollow plane and ebay had one (page 15) ref Ashington. G & M said it was not them but someone else. If you have bought from this source you should be able to compare addresses.

A good measure of my woodies came from G&M along with irons for specific purposes. They have the obscure sizes..parallels...and other nice infill stuff.

NOW....you have me thinking!

I shall call them tomorrow to see if they have any of the larger lever caps! Another source perchance Andy?

Douglas...fancy a day out in the country????

Jim

UPDATE: OOOOOOHHHH they do milling machines and lathe bits! Ok...definitely going now!

A goldmine by the look of it, and well priced too from having a quick peruse of the site. That's going straight in the satnav for next time I'm passing.

Thanks Adzeman, but I'm confused on the ebay connection. The seller I was thinking of (but have never actually bought from) is this one: http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/gandmtoolsales/ who are also there as "The Plane Iron Shop" with their contact details listed as

Antony Gardner
The Mill
Mill lane
Ashington
West Sussex
RH20 3BX

so I can't see how that is "not them but someone else." Not that it matters much really - it still looks like an interesting place to browse around in.

Hi Andy your not on your own I am confused also. I had a requirement for a No 2 groove plane so I looked on ebay and found this item.

You will note the seller is down as ashington West Sussex which, I assumed rightly or wrongly was G & M tools. I gave them a call and was informed they were not the seller, that it was another person in the village nothing to do with them, but he would have a look round for one and ring back.

Incidently those persons saying they would visit G & M Tools yesterday, did they and what did they buy?

I stopped by G & M today on my way past to check it out. Great place! Lots of stuff of interest to woodworkers, some decent hand tools and also some good machines in varying states of repair. Lots of excellent old drill presses. There was a good Startrite bandsaw with a wide throat, and a couple of very nice Union bowl lathes, and all sorts of odds and ends. I left the wallet in the van, fortunately.

Anyone looking for a bench vise might note that they have a few of those too....
