Martin very nice, I made mine out of spalted sycamore that was from the garden

I have had several folk ask where I bought it from, I am making a couple more at present. The Yew looks very nice, I think yours are more elegant.

It's a great feeling when you can answer that question with, 'Oh I made it myself!'
It's a shame that a quote to make one would 'Knock 'em bandy!'

They are all nice boxes. Very nice indeed.
If I get the wood could someone make me one! 8)

regards
John :)

Are you serious John, I plan to make some more out of spalted Beech and some maybe out of Yew if its any good, but that'll be in the Autumn.

Ahhh, Martin,

I am sorry, I was being facetious! It was a twist on an old Naval Joke. Can't explain here!

I do have some nice well-figured walnut as it happens. As I said earlier I am looking for smaller things to make, so I can keep working, until my knees are fixed. These tissue boxes might be just the ticket. I could sit down to make them!

If I do manage it, I'll post some piccies of course.
Thanks for what was in your mind of course Martin. :D

My regards.
John

Martin, Pete.

Can I ask a simple question? How are the lids fitted? In order to allow for expansion a double dado can be used but yours do not look like they employ this. So do you just glue the lid into a rebate and not worry about movement? There does not appear to be an expansion gap around the lid.

Sorry if its a stupid question but I am making a number of boxes at the moment, some of which will have a fixed lid.

Bob

My method is to glue the lid down but I laminate my lids the strip method so I have never experienced any problems with lids, glued or loose.

Bob, I veneered some 6 mm mdf and glued it. I cut the sycamore veneers on the band saw. Gluing solid wood can cause problems, on my boxes, see below I have the top floating in a rebate.

I have always been under the impression that glueing a solid wood top onto a box would cause a problem. For this reason I was going to use a double dado joint which would allow the top to float but not have a gap.

It is interesting to see that Devon has not had any problems, you must have made more boxes than the rest of us put together!

Did a count up the other morning (at 3 am) and 29 boxes have left home over the past 18 months, and I have got a few left at home  .

Reminds me I must do an update on my avatar.

Hi Bob, The tops for the boxes I made do fit into a dado and have to be inserted when assembling the sides, there is an expansion gap of 0.5mm all the way round and glue applied in the middle of the ends, if that makes sense, so it stops it from moving about but allows for a little expansion widthways, it wont move lengthways, I suppose it depends on how dry the wood is first and how much more it will dry out or absorb moisture and something this small is not going to move a great deal.
