He is going to paint it black (woodwork) as its going onto a black beam.
Any comments good or bad.

Have you thought of taking the hook out, routering (or otherwise cutting) a rounded edge slot 2/3 of the way into the beam where it was, inserting 2 or 3 links of chain and hold the end link with a wooden peg. Bell simply shackles onto the other end link?.

Looks great! shame its going to be painted.

Can you get the hook in brass? (or chain link as others have suggested)? Might be nice to keep all of the metalwork the same.

Just a thought, but it looks great.

Hi

What work you have done looks ok , pity there no name embossed on what look like a ships bell the would looked better and be a piece of history, possible mean something to someone as well , paint it black he must be nuts.hc

Nice period piece, however I am concerned if the hook is a screwed type, alright now, but sometime down the road it will fall out and someone might get an extra large clang?

Thanks for your comments.
Blister. the hook only touches the bell either side of the brass block so it does work loud and long.
Laird, extra work means a bigger bill. Trying to keep a sensible price for a new customer.
Mickthetree, as it's going to be painted the hook will get a coating to.
HC, customer gets what the customer wants. Ok with me. That's why I haven't spent too much time with the finnish of the wood.
Devonwoody, as the grain of the wood is nice and straight and the screw almost goes to the other side. I don't think there should be a problem. As it's going to be painted any moisture in the wood or outside should limit the movement to a minimum.
OPJ, the bracket will be drilled and screwed in all four corners.

Thanks for all your comments.

Putting it like that I think the customer will be extremely happy with it, and hopefully will return to give you lots more pennies.

Hi all,
As a point of interest, bells are very seldom hung as in the picture.
The hole at the top of the casting is for a solid bolt fixing, either to a stanchion or into a solid oak cross beam itself swung in trunnions.
The idea of great heavy bells swinging around willy nilly, either on a ship or in a church makes me shudder.
There is always an ancillary system for ringing the bell either by bell wheel in churches or hand clapper as in ships etc.
The ringing tone of the bell is unaffected by solid fixing in any way. Only a crack or fault will make it a bad ring, or a soft clanger!
The hanging is fine for the purpose shown however.
Regards,
martin
