Being a hobby woodworker, how can I tell the difference between oak and ash logs in their green state? I’ve got a log burner and had logs of both woods delivered but some got mixed up. The bark looks the same to me and the the rest also?

Look for the obvious white streaks/lines of ray parenchyma (medullary rays) on the end grain of oak. They go radially from the middle of the log to the edge.

Some other identifiers:-

As in the pic above, oak will have a distinct sapwood under the bark, whereas ash is pretty uniform throughout.

The colour of ash is lighter, similar to the oak sapwood

Smell - you'll just have to learn the difference.
