Timber valuations?

Hello. Yup it’s another newbie seeking some advice from the pros! So please excuse me if I have inadvertently posted in the wrong section.
Due to the untimely death of my father, I have been set the seemingly mammoth task of clearing out my father’s workshop by mother dearest. As a joiner/furniture maker for 30+ years he has managed to accumulate quite an impressive amount of tools, equipment and woodworking ‘stuff’ in general, including quite a few racks of timber. I was just wondering if there is anyone who could advise me on valuing and then selling on this timber. Is there such a job as wood valuer? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Work out what types you have and the amount (in Cubic metres) and ring round a few timber merchants and they will give you the price per cubic metre and you'll get an idea of what it's worth.

Hi Dibs. Thank you and thanks for the swift reply.
There lies my problem… I can not tell the difference between Brazilian mahogany and red oak!! I know the majority is old stock Brazilian mahogany, but he also liked building staircases in Red Oak so its all a bit jumbled. Sorry for being dumb (it comes so naturally) So would the timber merchants buy wood privately?

It may make sense to put the whole lot through a specialist auction house. I don't think there are many, but H J Pugh in Ledbury (http://www.hjpugh.com/index.shtml ) might be near enough to be feasible. They have been discussed enthusiastically on here a few times, and do advertise as holding specialist sales of timber and woodworking tools.

I've no direct experience of this, but others on here will have. You have my sympathy and I'm sure other members here will feel the same way.

PS I see their next tool auction is on 6 August, which is too soon for you but may be of interest to some buyers.

If you can work out whats what, you could try putting it on eBay with a reserve price of what you want for it.

I forgot to say the other obvious thing - with both tools and timber, there are plenty of us on here who would be happy to help identify what you have from photos, and suggest sensible values.

You could offer stuff for sale in our Market Place board if you want to.

Hi all.

Thanks for all the replies, you have given me much food for thought and I think I should be able to sort it all out from what has been said so far.
The first port of call will be to try and sell on this site first before trying elsewhere, but the tools and workshop will be having one last outing with us as they are being used to finish all the jobs around the house that always got put at the bottom of the list as paid jobs always took priority (I am sure this will resonate with most of you!). So once we have a kitchen again and the conservatory which has been half built for the last 15 or so years are completed the majority of the tools and wood etc will be posted in the classified / market place section-fingers crossed by the end of the summer.

Now that is sound advice.

One thing that really bugs me, is the dealers that come in and offer next to nothing for items that they know very well have a high value. I know that we all have to earn a living, but I hate those parasite scum that prey on peoples vulnerability.
