I did something similar using parallel 2 x 1 uprights with just the occasional spacer between them. Bearers were made from 3/4 ply in a rough L shape. Each had two holes and were bolted through regularly spaced holes in the uprights. The advantage of this variation of Steve's system is that the spacing is adjustable and the ply bearers do not sag even though they are relatively light.

Jim - how did you fix these uprights to the wall?

I was thinking of 3 or 4 metal straps over each set of uprights, with heavy screws and rawl plugs.

Would that do the trick, or is there a simpler/better way?

Remember I am looking for a cost effective (cheap :!: :!: ) solution

But that is £35, is a metre long and you only get two, (your wood will sag in the middle) where as Steve's goes from floor to ceiling, is about 2.5 metres wide and probably costs about the same. You could do it for free if you scour a few skips.:?:

Dave,

Sorry for delay, I missed your post. I just screwed them to the wall with plugs and some chunky screws and added some 90 deg brackets at the top which were screwed through into the ceiling joists although I think these were really overkill as most of the weight is taken vertically. I had a lot of weight on it for some years and it was as firm when I took it out a few months age as at the beginning. I now have a hugely heavy welded steel cantilever system bought in a hurry at huge expense to make way for an extension, but that's another story.
