Finally on to the roof for these chickens, they have will be living in luxury the clucky so and sos

The plans use plywood base for the roof with feather edge on top.
I like the look of ship lap, maybe around 16mm.

If I used this, will it be weatherproof enough without he need for plywood do you think.

Sounds like you're creating a perfect gap for red mites between the ply & feather-edge?

Yes I thought that too.
I was thinking of just using the ship lap (if that's a good option) and no plywood for that reason really.
I don't want to felt it as that may also encourage red mite. Equally though it needs to be water tight. The ship lap should do the job though?

Does it have to be a wooden roof?

I use metal profile sheeting on mine (because that's what I already have a stack of), but if you can get Onduline sheeting, that's supposed to be excellent.

Anything 'profile' or 'corrugated' gives added ventilation under the eaves too, which is a bonus for a coop.

Ship lap would work, but needs constant maintenance on a roof, I would have thought?

Felt on a coop is a definite no-no, the mites thrive under felt.

Looks a great idea, thankyou.

My local wickes has the nails, trim and roof material in stock. Will go with that, no maintenance, vents well and is fully waterproof. If the sheet isn't wide enough I can always overlap too
