dose anyone know where i could do one?? been looking and cant find a short/ few days/ kind of course, cheers

CAT.org.....

the Centre for Alternative Technology, Macchynlleth, North Wales........they run grean oak framing courses.

Having said that, if you are working to drawings they should have all the information you need.......if you are any sort of woodworker then the skills are dead easy. Green oak is just lovely to work......it really is like cheddar cheese. I reckon that you might be better off just giving it a go if your woodworking skills are already OK.

yer ive heard its nice to work, i take it an arcitect would do all the drawings etc if you were thinking of building a house??

I'd love to have a go at that one day, not in this weather tho!! ;)

Tom,

you'd love it! .......and it is a great excuse to buy a couple of new chisels. You need a wide one (1.5" or even 2"), and you may need a really long one, particularly for principal trusses where the mortices are at an angle. I've a friend who made his own from a wood-turners chisel.

Timber framing rocks! and Joe Thompson's courses at the Weald and Downland Museum are excellent. Not least they show you what you can bring to heavy framing from a joinery/carpentry background and what can be left, which all saves time and money on a frame.
If you were looking at building a large frame, anything which comes under building regs and or planning I would strongly advise choosing structural engineers and architects who have specific heavy framing experience. Details can be found at the Carpenters Fellowship website.
The Timber framers Guild in the states publish a couple of very good manuals on frames which include some frame designs in them. You would still need to pass the drawing by an engineer before you get a cutting list but still…

enjoy!
