I'm playing with the idea of making a dovetailed thumb plane but am struggling with some details. (I may even go for a screwed construction a la Karl Holtey / Ron Brese, even though I swore last time that I'd never do it again.)

Can you guys help me out. I'm just after basic dimensions, length, width, bed angles etc. I'm guessing at around 5" long with a 1 1/4" iron bedded at around 15 degrees.

I'm guessing that some of you collectors will have a thumb plane stashed away somewhere, so any help would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Dunno if it it's any help Aled but I've got a book here by Jim Kingshott showing drawings for what you're after. If it'll help pop in on your way by and you can borrow it.

Roy.

Thanks for the offer Roy, but I have that book, didn't think to look at it though.

The wife was out this afternoon, so in between keeping my 2 and 4 year old boys under control, I had a play on my CAD program.

A couple of hours later I had this.

Iron - 38mm x 4mm thick O1 tool steel

What do you think??

Very nice Aled, you shouldn't have any trouble marketing a few of those here.

Roy.

That is a nice size Aled. I am a big fan of the Veritas Apron Plane, which has very similar dimensions. So I think your design would make a very handy plane. Screwed construction abandoned then?

Aled, I have a selection of round soled luthier thumb planes (mostly Ibex) and the odd flat soled one, all have curved bodies. These truly are thumb planes as they're tiny, if you want any dimensions let me know
